Welcome to the Western Mountain Reading Council! What is the WMRC?
Western Mountains Reading Council is an affiliate of the North Carolina Reading Association (NCRA) and the International Literacy Association (ILA). This Council was formed in 2003 to serve Macon and Jackson Counties with the goals of providing professional development for educators, promoting literacy within the community, and providing a platform for Young Authors. Teachers can earn CEUs by attending meetings, participating in a service project and paying dues. CEUs are offered for each meeting attended and for participating in the optional professional reading.
Since its inception, WMRC has had a positive influence on the community and members. Members include administrators, educators, student interns, retired teachers, certified substitutes, community members, and any others interested in promoting literacy and encouraging a lifelong love of reading. WMRC board members meet on a regular basis to plan major events and fundraisers. The council hosts several opportunities for professional development and service projects for the community throughout each school year.
